In a futuristic earth, Rozzum Unit 7134 is one of several Rozzum line robots that is left stranded on a remote island during a typhoon. Some time after being activated by the local wildlife, she ends up being imprinted on by an orphaned gosling whom she names "Brightbill." While co-habitating with the adopted gosling and a wild fox called "Fink," Roz spends several months in the untamed wilderness slowly overriding her code and gaining sapience in order to care for Brightbill. Along the way, she discovers what it is like to feel love and other emotions, all while learning to adapt and find a home in a place where she once believed she did not belong.
